After many failed attempts of trying to install MS-DOS 7.0 and not feeling it with FreeDOS, I have decided to try to install MS-DOS 6.22. Unfortunately, there was no guide on the internet to help me and I did not feel the will to get USB Floppy Drives and Floppies. I tried to emulate using a USB Pen Drive but all my attempts have failed. So instead, I have tried a new method using bits and pieces from the web.

  • MS-DOS 6.22 Supplemental Utilities. My copy of MS-DOS includes a fourth disk titled 'MS-DOS 6.2 Supplemental Utilities,' which can also be obtained from the link above (grab the version for MS-DOS 6.22, named SUP622.EXE). This disk is not mandatory, and mostly just includes some extra features from previous versions of DOS that were dropped for.
  • I saw the links you mentioned above. In the second link, it has many dos versions ranging from 3.3 to 6.22. And on GitHub, Microsoft/MS-DOS provides 1.25 and 2.0. I want to use MS-DOS for studying and working, which version should I choose? My pc uses intel e3 1230 v2 cpu, and has a asus p8b75-v motherboard. It has 12 GB memory.
What you need:
- A PC with CD or DVD drive with an ATA HDD operation option in BIOS (and also a secondary PC if using a single DVD/CD-RW)
- 3 CD-R/DVD-R discs or a single CD-RW/DVD-RW disc
- MS-DOS 6.22 install disk .imgs
- Patience
First, you need to use mkisofs to make a bootable CD floppy image. Download it along with other tools from the cdrecord project. Next, make sure you have .img files of MS-DOS 6.22 install floppies. Make a new directory to put your .img files in and don't forget the name. Copy only the first disk to that directory. Now, in the directory that the folder is located in, use mkisofs with these parameters : -b 'filename of floppy image name' -o 'name of output iso image' 'name of directory with .img image' . An iso file for the image should appear in the current directory.
Now, replace the disk 1 image with the next disk and repeat the previous step. Repeat until all imgs were used. Now, you need to burn each iso to a CD or DVD. Turn on your test PC and change your bios settings to be in ATA compatibility mode and not ACHI mode. Now, boot off of Disk 1 and continue setup as normal. When it prompts you, insert the next disk and wait till the drive is activated then press enter and repeat until setup is finshed. Boot your PC and see what happens. If your pc boots normally then you are done. If you see a blinking cursor then insert Disk 1 and press F3 twice to enter a DOS prompt. Type in fdisk /mbr
